John Clayton Mayer werd geboren in Bridgeport (Connecticut) op 16 oktober 1977. Toen Mayer 17 was, werd hij vanwege een hartritmestoornis opgenomen in het ziekenhuis. Mayer: "That was the moment the songwriter in me was born." Na het afbreken van zijn studie op het Berklee College of Music in Boston verhuisde hij in 1997 naar Atlanta, Georgia. In 2005 bereikte hij voor het eerst de Nederlandse Top 40 met Daughters (#30). In 2008 coveren Fall Out Boy en John Mayer Michael Jacksons Beat It en daarmee haalden ze tip 3 in Nederland. In 2009 haalde Who Says #18. Naast zanger is Mayer ook stand-up comedian en schrijver; o.a. voor Esquire. Mayer heeft een groot aantal tatoeages, waaronder de letters 'SRV', een afkorting van zijn idool Stevie Ray Vaughan.
