Formidable van Stromae stijgt op 21 december 2013 van 12 naar 6 in de zesde week notering. Het is zijn derde Top 40- en top 10-succes. In Frankrijk en België (zowel Wallonië als Vlaanderen) bereikte de single al nummer 1. In Nederland stijgt de single snel mede dankzij de Nederlandstalige cover van Cheyenne Toney in tvprogramma The Voice Of Holland.

Stromae is de artiestennaam van Paul Van Haver. De in Brussel op 12 maart 1985 geboren singer-songwriter is van Belgisch-Rwandese afkomst. In 2010 debuteerde hij met de track Alors On Danse die 8 weken op #1 stond in de Top 40.

U2 komt met Ordinary Love op 14 december 2013 op 9 de Top 40 binnen. De song is een eerbetoon aan Nelson Mandela. Frontman Bono was namelijk goed bevriend met de vroegere Zuid-Afrikaanse president en sprak hem regelmatig.
Ordinary Love is afkomstig van de soundtrack van de film Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom. Toen de film gemaakt werd en U2 het thema schreef, wist natuurlijk nog niemand dat Nelson Mandela zelf amper een week na de release van de track zou overlijden. De film ging op 5 december 2013 in Groot-Brittannië in première. Gedurende die avond werd bekend dat Nelson Mandela op 95-jarige leeftijd was overleden, waarna direct een minuut stilte werd gehouden. Het is U2's 44ste hit in Nederland en hun 31ste top 10 succes. Op 22 februari 2014 stijgt de single in de 11e week notering terug de top 10 in van 12 naar 8.

U2 is een Ierse rockband met Bono (Paul David Hewson)-zang en gitaar, The Edge (David Howell Evans)-gitaar, piano, bas en soms zang, Adam Clayton op bas en soms gitaar, en Larry Mullen jr. op drums. Deze bezetting is van het begin in 1976 af altijd ongewijzigd gebleven wat uitzonderlijk is in de popgeschiedenis. I Will Follow (live) was in 1982 hun eerste hit (#12). Pas in 2000 scoorden ze hun eerste nummer 1 hit met Beautiful Day (2 weken). Cris Cab featuring Pharrell Williams stijgt met Liar Liar op 14 december 2013 in de vijfde week van 11 naar 10. In de zevende week stijgt de single terug de top 10 in van 11 naar 9. Officieel krijgt Pharrell er geen credit voor, maar hij is wel de zanger op Liar Liar en hij is ook te zien in de muziekvideo.

Cris Cab werd geboren op 21 januari 1993 in Miami, Florida. Hij heeft Cubaanse roots. Vanaf zijn vijfde levensjaar speelt hij gitaar. Via een vriend kwam hij als tiener in contact met Pharrell Williams aan wie hij een paar demo’s liet horen. Dat leidde aanvankelijk nog niet tot een contract, maar drie jaren later wel.

Gandhi Djuna werd geboren in Kinshasa op 5 mei 1986. Hij is de zoon van de Congolese zanger Djanana Djuna. Op zijn tweede verhuisde hij met zijn ouders naar Frankrijk. Gandi groeide op in Parijs, studeerde er communicatie en grafische kunst en sloot zich ondertussen aan bij de Parijse hiphopgroep Sexion D'Assaut. In 2012 besloot Gandi het ook eens solo te proberen en kwam met zijn debuutalbum Subliminal.

Marco Borsato en Trijntje Oosterhuis stijgen op 30 november 2013 met superstip van 12 naar 3. Marco Borsato schrijft met Ik zou het zo weer overdoen Top 40-geschiedenis. Achter Parra for cuva zit de Duitse producer Nicolas Demuth (22). Hij zegt beïnvloed te zijn door pianist Ludovico Einaudi, waarvan hij het improviseren heeft geleerd. Na een jaar door Nieuw-Zeeland te hebben gezworven, vestigde hij zich in Berlijn om de studie audiodesign te volgen. Daar nam hij het nummer Swept Away op met zijn vroegere buurmeisje Anna Naklab. Sindsdien werken de twee samen en zingt Anna (14 juli 1993) de nummers in van Parra for cuva.

Op 2 november 2013 stijgen Bløf & Nielson van 14 naar 10 met Mannenharten. Het is de titeltrack van de gelijknamige film die op 28 november 2013 in de Nederlandse bioscopen te zien zal zijn. De rolprent is een remake van de succesvolle Duitse bioscoopfilm Männerherzen uit 2009.
Het is de vijfde hit voor Nielson en de vijfendertigste voor Bløf.

Op 2 november 2013 stijgt Avicii met Hey Brother van 13 naar 6 in de derde week notering. Het is zijn 13e hit in de Top 40. Hey Brother is de derde single van het album True. Het nummer is ingezongen door de zanger Dan Tyminski. In Oostenrijk, Noorwegen en Zweden stond de track al op 1.


Avicii is de artiestennaam van Tim Bergling, die op 8 september 1989 in Stockholm geboren werd. Hij brak in 2010 door met Bromance (#2). Eerder in 2013 stond Wake Me Up! 11 weken aan de top van de Top 40.

Op 26 oktober 2013 komt Muziek van Marco Borsato featuring Bag2Bank & Ali B op 9 de Top 40 binnen. De singleversie duurt 3:44, de albumversie zal 5:29 zijn. In interviews vergelijkt Marco Borsato zijn nieuwste hit Muziek de afgelopen weken regelmatig met Rood. Rood stond in 2011 maar liefst elf weken op nummer 1. Het was destijds Marco's tiende No. 1-hit en daarna volgden er nog eens vier, waardoor de teller nu op veertien staat. De afgelopen twee jaar gebruikte Marco, naast zijn werk als coach bij The Voice Of Holland om samen met zijn vaste componist John Ewbank aan een nieuw album te werken. Op 19 oktober 2013 stijgt Ilse DeLange van 21 naar 8 in de derde week notering. Op 24 september 2013 had het 538-radioprogramma 'Evers staat op' de primeur vanBlue Bittersweet. De track is de titelsong van de Nederlandse speelfilm Het Diner die op 7 november 2013 in de bioscoop zal verschijnen. Het is haar 22e hit en 7e top 10 succes.

Ilse DeLange is de artiestennaam van Ilse Annoeska de Lange (Almelo, 13 mei 1977). Ze won in 1998, 2001, 2004 en 2009 een Edison en haar albums bereikten zeventien keer platina. Vanaf het vierde seizoen is DeLange te zien als coach bij het televisieprogramma The voice of Holland. In 1998 scoorde ze haar eerste hit met I'm Not So Tough (#35). Lorde

Op 19 oktober 2013 stijgt Lorde met Royals van 12 naar 10 in de dertiende week notering. Royals behaalde al de nummer 1-positie in de hitlijsten van Canada, Nieuw-Zeeland en de Verenigde Staten. In Vlaanderen behaalde Tennis Court eerder in 2013 al een tipnotering.

Lorde is de artiestennaam van Ella Yelich-O'Connor. Ze werd geboren in Auckland, Nieuw-Zeeland, op 7 november 1996. In 2008 deed ze op twaalfjarige leeftijd mee met een lokale talentenjacht. Ellie Goulding

Ellie Goulding stijgt op 5 oktober 2013 van 13 naar 9 met Burn in de vijfde week notering. Na Lights (#33) en I Need Your Love (#29), samen met Calvin Harris, is Burn haar de derde hit in de Media Markt Top 40.

De track werd geschreven door onder anderen Ryan Tedder van One Republic. Leona Lewis was de eerste die Burn opnam. Dat deed ze voor haar album Glassheart uit 2012. Toen Leona uiteindelijk te veel materiaal bleek te hebben en moest gaan schrappen besloot ze Burn te laten vallen en te kiezen voor Favourite Scar. Zo kwam Burn terecht bij Ellie Goulding. Het resultaat staat op haar album Halcyon Days. Dat is een herziene re-release van Ellie's album Halcyon uit 2012.

Elena Jane Goulding (Hereford, 30 december 1986), beter bekend als Ellie Goulding, is een Britse singer-songwriter en gitariste. Ze verwierf in Nederland haar eerste bekendheid vanwege haar eerste plaats in een door de BBC samengestelde lijst van de meest veelbelovende artiesten: BBC Sound of 2010.

DVBBS & Borgeous

Tsunami van DVBBS en Borgeous stijgt op 28 september 2013 van 16 naar 3. De track brak door dankzij het dancefestival Tomorrowland. Op 4 januari 2014, in de 16e week notering, stijgt de track terug de top 10 in van 16 naar 8.

Dvbbs zijn de broers Van den Hoef. Ondanks hun achternaam komen ze niet uit Nederland, maar uit het Canadese Toronto. Chris Andre werd geboren als Christopher van den Hoef op 1 januari 1990 en Alex Andre werd geboren als Alexandre van den Hoef op 17 oktober 1991. De letter 'v' in hun actnaam wordt uitgesproken als 'u' en klinkt dus als Dubbs. Alex en Chris zijn ook de uitvinders van het zogenaamde Woozy River Rafting. Dat is een speciale vorm van crowdsurfen.

Tsunami is een samenwerking met de Amerikaanse producer Borgeous die eerder remixen maakte voor onder anderen Rihanna en Ciara.

De track is voornamelijk instrumentaal, maar met herhaaldelijk de woorden 'jump' en 'tsunami'.

Eelke Kleijn

Ein Tag am Strand (Stand Up) van Eelke Kleijn stijgt op 21 september 2013 van 21 naar 9. Hoewel de titel van de instrumentale track Duitstalig is, komt Eelke Kleijn uit Nederland. In eerste instantie was Ein Tag am Strand (Stand Up) alleen een instrumentale track, maar om de kans op airplay te vergroten, besloot Eelke ook een versie op te nemen met zanger Tresor Riziky (Tres:Or) uit Congo.

Eelke Kleijn werd op 11 juni 1983 geboren in Rotterdam. Eelke maakte eerder muziek voor commercials van merken als Vodafone en Nike. Ook werkte hij als componist mee aan trailers van een Hollywood-film als This Means War.

Niels Geusebroek

Take Your Time Girl van Niels Geusebroek stijgt op 21 september 2013 van 14 naar 1 in de Top 40. Het uitgangspunt van het nummer is de hartslag van een nog niet geboren baby. Op 29 augustus 2013 was Niels te gast in het 538-programma Ruuddewild.nl. Een week eerder had de vaste nieuwslezers van die middagshow, Hannelore Zwitserlood, vol trots in de uitzending de hartslag van haar ongeboren dochtertje laten horen. Deejay Ruud de Wild en sidekick Jelte van der Goot kwamen op het idee om daar iets mee te doen en daarop werd Niels Geusebroek ingeschakeld. Hij kreeg van het duo de opdracht om een liedje te maken, met de hartslag van de baby als basis. Het resultaat kwam Niels op 29 augustus live op 538 laten horen. Het liedje maakte veel los en Niels stelde het als download beschikbaar.

Niels Geusebroek werd geboren op 4 augustus 1979. In 2002 en 2008 had Niels al twee bescheiden hits als zanger van de band Silkstone: Ready #40 en Here In Your World #35. De band werd opgeheven in 2009. Niels Geusebroek was halve finalist van The Voice Of Holland 2011. Eerder in 2013 kwam Year Of Summer, in de Wildstylez-remix, tot #2 in de Top 40. Als onderdeel van Nationaal Comité Inhuldiging haalde hij #2 met het Koningslied.

Pharell Williams

Op 14 september 2013 stijgt Pharell Williams van 11 naar 9 met Happy in de vijfde week notering. Op 28 september 2013 keert hij terug in de top 10 en op 19 april 2014 in de 36e week nog eens en dan is het al de succesvolste track die ooit in de Top 40 heeft gestaan. Happy is de themasong van de film Despicable me 2 die sinds 26 juni 2013 in de Nederlandse bioscopen te zien is.
In juni haalde de Nederlandse formatie Mainstreet de tipparade niet met Despicable Me, het thema van Verschrikkelijke ikke, de Nederlandse versie van Despicable me 2.

Imagine Dragons

Het viertal Imagine Dragons heeft met On Top Of The World zijn eerste hit in de Top 40 te pakken. Single Radioactive flopte eerder in 2013. Beide tracks zijn afkomstig van het debuutalbum Night Visions.

On Top Of The World verscheen in de Verenigde Staten al in 2012. Met succes: zo was On Top Of The World in het najaar van 2012 wekelijks op de Amerikaanse zender CBS te horen als openingstune van de geflopte sitcom Partners. Ook staat het nummer op de soundtrack van de game FIFA 13 en een schoolkoor uit New York zong begin dit jaar een cover tijdens de inauguratieceremonie van de Amerikaanse president Barack Obama.

Imagine Dragons werd opgericht in 2008. Vanaf 2011 bestaat de groep in de huidige bezetting: zanger-drummer Dan Reynolds, basgitarist Ben McKee, gitarist    Wayne Sermon en drummer-violist Dan Platzman.

Katy Perry komt op 24 augustus 2013 op 9 de Top 40 binnen met Roar. Ze wint de slag van Lady Gaga die met haar nieuwe track Applause in dezelfde week 'slechts' op 21 binnenkomt. Van Applause van Lady Gaga wordt gezegd dat het op nummers van Katy Perry lijkt. Roar van Katy Perry zou overeenkomsten vertonen met Brave van Sarah Bareilles van haar album The Blessed Unrest dat in april 2013 verscheen. De beat in Roar wordt ook vergeleken met Hard Knocked Life van Jay-Z.
Roar is Katy Perry's 14e hit en 7e top 10-succes. De track is de voorloper van Prism, het vierde studioalbum van Katy Perry dat op 22 oktober 2013 zal verschijnen. Perry's laatste album is Teenage Dream uit 2010.

Katy Perry is de artiestennaam van Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson (Santa Barbara, 25 oktober 1984). Haar eerste twee singles I Kissed A Girl en Hot N Cold stonden in 2008 twee weken op #1.
Perry trouwde op 23 oktober 2010 met komiek Russell Brand. Ze hadden sinds september 2009 een relatie. Brand vroeg eind 2011 een scheiding aan. Sinds augustus 2012 heeft Perry een relatie met John Mayer.

Martin Garrix

Martin Garrix stijgt met de instrumentale track Animals op 27 juli 2013 van 16 naar 7 in de tweede week notering. Animals bereikte eerder al de eerste plaats van de dancelijst van de Amerikaanse website Beatport. Zowel in Wallonië (#22) als Vlaanderen (#11) is de track ook al een hit.

Martin Garrix is de artiestennaam van dj-producer Martijn Garritsen. Hij werd geboren op 14 mei 1996 in Amsterdam. Hij maakte in 2012 de officiële remix van Your Body van Christina Aguilera, maar dat was niet de (geflopte) singleversie. Zijn mix kwam alleen op de luxe versie van haar cd Lotus terecht. Door het succes van zijn djwerk stopte hij met het VWO en begon hij aan zijn studie aan de Herman Brood Academie.

Serebro

Serebro stijgt met Mi Mi Mi op 27 juli 2013 van 24 naar 9. Het is hun eerste hit in Nederland. In hun vaderland Rusland heeft het trio al meerdere nummer 1-hits op hun naam geschreven.

Serebro deed in 2007 mee aan het Eurovisie Songfestival. Zij werden derde voor Rusland achter winnaar Servië en runner-up Oekraïne met Song #1. De bezetting van de groep is nu anders dan toen. Zangeres Marina Lizorkina besloot om privéredenen te stoppen met Serebro en zij werd vervangen door Anastasia Karpova. De act bestaat verder uit Elena Temnikova en Olga Seryabkina. Het trio werd in 2006 bedacht door producer Max Fadeev. Serebro is Russisch voor 'zilver'.

Stromae

Stromae stijgt op 20 juli 2013 van 21 naar 7 met Papaoutai. Het is zijn tweede Top 40- en top 10-succes. In Vlaanderen is naast Papaoutai (#5) ook Formidable een hit en die laatstgenoemde staat daar op #1. Ook in Wallonië is Formidable de grotere hit; ook daar #1. Beide tracks zullen te vinden zijn op het later dit jaar te verschijnen nieuwe album van Stromae.

Papaoutai heeft alles te maken met de Rwandese vader van Stromae en dan vooral met het feit dat hij die man slechts drie keer in zijn leven heeft gezien. Papaoutai is namelijk een verbastering van het Franse zinnetje ‘papa, où t'es?’ Dat betekent in het Nederlands vertaald ‘papa, waar ben je?’.


Stromae is de artiestennaam van Paul Van Haver. De in Brussel op 12 maart 1985 geboren singer-songwriter is van Belgisch-Rwandese afkomst. In 2010 debuteerde hij met de track Alors On Danse die maar liefst 8 weken op #1 stond in de Top 40. Opvolger Te Quiero flopte genadeloos, waardoor hij een eendagsvlieg was tot op 13 juli 2013 Papaoutai binnenkwam.
