Nicki Minaj werd geboren als Onika Tanya Maraj in Saint James, Trinidad, op 8 december 1982. Saint James is een voorstad van Port of Spain, de hoofdstad van Trinidad en Tobago. Haar ouders zijn van Indiase en Afro-Trinidadiaanse afkomt. Nicki woonde in Saint James bij haar grootmoeder tot ze vijf jaar was, daarna woonde ze in New York. Volgens Minaj was haar vader alcoholist en drugsverslaafd. Ze werd ontdekt door rapper Lil' Wayne en tekende in 2009 een platencontract bij zijn label Young Money Entertainment, een onderdeel van Motown. In oktober 2010 scoorde ze samen met Will.i.am haar eerste Top 40 hit met Check It Out! (#27).
