Abel Tesfaye werd op 16 februari 1990 in Canada geboren. Hij begon in 2010 met het uploaden van tracks naar YouTube onder de naam The Weeknd. In 2011 was die hoeveelheid nummers uitgegroeid tot een drietal mixtapes, waaruit later zijn debuutalbum Kiss Land wordt samengesteld.
